The Greenwich Meridian Passes through the town.
Cleethorpes is situated on the River Humber, it is actually the estuary. and not the sea, but is treated as a seaside town. |
Blundell Park (Grimsby Football Ground) is situated here, possibly soon to move to Great Coates. |
Cleethorpes was made up of three small villages, Itterby, Oole and Thrunscoe, which were part of the parish called Clee. The name "Cleethorpes" came about by joining the words "clee", (clay), and "thorpes", (villages). |
Originally a fishing village, the opening of the railways encouraged persons from Yorkshire to visit this coastal ares and it became popular as a tourist coastal town. Like so many villages, parts of humberston and weelsby villages were swallowed up by cleethorpes expansion, the latter being completely absorbed by both Grimsby and Cleethorpes. In 1974 Grimsby attempted unsuccessfully to absorb Cleethorpes, however it kept its own borough. With the loss of the Humberside county it is now bundled with Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire, so technically became absorbed by default. |
On a clear day, the lighthouse and the wind turbines situated on Spurn Point can be seen on the other side of the estuary.
Cleethorpes has substantial boating lake, a Multiplex Cinema, Swimming Pool, 10 Pin Bowling, Light Railway, Play Towers, Pleasure Island Theme Park and the Discovery Centre. |
