John Wesley (Methodist) preached in the Church in 1758.
St James's Church is the only parish church in the country to have a choir school attached to it, this was founded in 1880. Damage was sustained during World War II. On 14th July 1943, two bombs dropped into the churchyard, destroying the north wall of the transept. Nearly all the windows were broken, and a majority of the slates were thrown from the roof. The windows in the Memorial Chapel (built to remember those who lost their lives in the First World War) were the only windows to survive the second world war bombing. Shrapnel can still be found in the northern face of the Lady Chapel walls.
