Little Coates originally stretched northward to the Pyewipe industrial estate, westward to the River Freshney and south to Laceby Road (A46). On the other side of the river are Great Coates, the Willows and Wybers Wood Housing Estate. To the south is Bradley.*

| Natural Springs near Chelmsford Avenue and West Hill Road would have been a major reason for settling here, this area soon became a proper waterworks in 1863, pumping supplies to grimsby via scartho reservoir. This is still in use today by anglian water. |

| The council housing in the area was transferred to Shoreline Housing in 2005, and a decision has been made to demolish the Yarborough estate Housing and rebuild due to the vast defects in the construction. |
