Nunsthorpe
is a suburb and housing estate in the western part of Grimsby, bordering Bradley and Scartho |
This
Estate has gone through a long period of bad press, with
the police and fire service spending a lot more time in
the estate than out of it, however the estate has definitely
turned a corner, house prices were increasing before the resession (something
unheard of in the estate 10 years ago) crime is much lower,
and people are starting to want to live there again. |
| I am not saying its now perfect, there are still some areas you would certainly not want to visit, yet alone live, but some areas are now very nice and i would have no hesitation living there myself. The main
trouble areas appears to have moved elsewhere, mainly to areas of high quantity of private rented properties in east marsh district. |
There
are in excess of 2,400 homes on the nunsthorpe estate, mainly former council
properties now owned by the Shoreline Housing Partnership, or in private ownership. There
is a small area of properties belonging to the Havelok/Northern Counties
housing associations. |
| The
Original Development (the older housing) is referred to as Old Nunsthorpe. |
| Although
a 20th century development, the name was derived from the
Nuns who used to be at the Augustinian Priory (St Leonard)
, and the Old English word Thorpe which was used to describe
a village. Nunsthorpe was never an actual village despite its name. |
| The
Priory was dissolved by King Henry 8 in 1539 along with
so many other priories and abbeys in the United Kingdom including Louth Abbey, and Thornton Abbey nearby. |
| In
1954 Grimsby College, now called The
Grimsby Institute of Higher and Further Education,
acquired the site. |
| In
1928, with the absorption of Scartho into Grimsby ,
Nunsthorpe being under scartho control, followed by default. |
