Pier39

Cleethorpes Pier (Pier 39) is just 335 feet long.

When it was originally built in 1872 at a cost of £8000, built by a firm called Head Wrightson and opened August bank holiday 1873.

There was a concert hall built onto the pier in 1888, but just 15 years later it was destroyed by fire.

The new pavilion was built in 1905 shops and a café at the pier head and a new pavilion was built nearer the promenade, and is what is today a nightclub.

The pier’s original length was 1,200ft and even at low tide reached the sea. The pier was breached during world war II because of a fear of German invasion, and was never rebuilt due to lack of funds to replace the breached section, so they demolished the remaining breached section.

The pier's construction is of iron piles with a timber decking.

In the 1980’s the pier was sold to a business man who opened a modern night club on it and named it pier 39. The original pier was extended to accommodate the night club and two extra bars costing £600,000.

Trivia The pier being just 335ft, is now the UK’s shortest pier!
